The bells of Giotto’s bell tower in Florence will not ring from 8 to 26 November 2021 to allow the rotation of the Major Bell known as Santa Reparata or Campanone, built in 1475 in honour of the saint after whom the ancient Florentine Cathedral was named. It is one of the largest active bells in Italy today, with extraordinary measures: a diameter of 2 meters and a height of 210 cm, with a thickness of 15 cm for over 5 tons of weight. It was recast in 1705, after cracks had formed.<\/p>\n

The maintenance intervention<\/b>, commissioned and technically coordinated by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, will be performed by one of the Italian companies with greater experience in this sector, A.E.I. DI PEREGO C. & C., the company is based in the province of Milan in Pozzuolo Martesana.<\/b> It will be a complex but almost invisible intervention, because it was carried out inside the belfry, apart from the days of 8, 9, 25 and 26 November when there will be a crane in the area in front of the bell tower and the monument will be closed to the public for allow the work of handling the bell.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The rotation of a quarter of the Campanone was necessary because the use has thinned the thickness of the bronze in the points where the clapper strikes. “Once the wear of 10% of the thickness has been exceeded, as in this case – explains Claudio Perego, owner of A.E.I.<\/b> – we must intervene because there are many chances that the bell will break \u201d. This will be the last time the Campanone can be rotated, having already been turned on the other sides. [\u2026]<\/p>\n

Giotto’s Bell Tower is equipped with a total of 12 bells of which 5, the oldest, are now disused but still arranged inside the monument, while the other 7, including the Campanone, of different eras and sizes, are functional and together they constitute the so-called Concerto. [\u2026]<\/p>\n

In addition to the Campanone, the other 6 active bells on Giotto’s Bell Tower are those of the Misericordia, built in 1670 and recast in 1830, the Apostolic, the Annunziata, the Mater Dei, the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception, the latter merged between 1956 and 1957. The bells of Giotto’s bell tower are located at a height of 65 meters from the ground, while in ancient times they were about 70.5 meters.<\/p>\n

Le campane del Campanile di Giotto a Firenze non suoneranno dall\u20198 al 26 novembre 2021 per permettere i lavori di rotazione della\u202f<\/span>Campana Maggiore<\/span><\/i>\u202fdetta di\u202f<\/span>Santa Reparata<\/span><\/i>\u202fo\u202f<\/span>Campanone,\u202f<\/span><\/i>realizzata nel 1475 in onore della santa a cui era intitolata l'antica Cattedrale fiorentina. Si tratta di una delle pi\u00f9 grandi campane attive oggi in Italia, dalle misure straordinarie: un diametro di 2 metri e un'altezza di 210 cm, con uno spessore di 15 cm per oltre 5 tonnellate di peso. Fu rifusa nel 1705, dopo che si erano create delle crepe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

L\u2019intervento di manutenzione, commissionato e coordinato tecnicamente dall\u2019<\/span>Opera di Santa Maria<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>del Fiore<\/span><\/b>, sar\u00e0 eseguito da una delle aziende italiane con maggiore esperienza in questo settore,\u202f<\/span>A.E.I. DI PEREGO con sede a Pozzuolo Martesana in provincia di Milano<\/span><\/b>. Sar\u00e0 un intervento complesso ma pressoch\u00e9 invisibile, perch\u00e9 svolto all'interno della cella campanaria, a parte nelle giornate dell\u20198, 9, 25 e 26 novembre quando sar\u00e0 presente una gru nell'area antistante al Campanile e il monumento sar\u00e0 chiuso al pubblico per permettere i lavori di movimentazione della campana.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

La rotazione di un quarto del\u202f<\/span>Campanone<\/span><\/i>\u202fsi \u00e8 resa necessaria perch\u00e9 l\u2019uso ha assottigliato lo spessore del bronzo nei punti dove batte il battaglio. \u201cUna volta superata l\u2019usura del 10% dello spessore, come in questo caso - spiega\u202f<\/span>Claudio Perego<\/span><\/b>, titolare di\u202fA.E.I.\u202f- bisogna intervenire perch\u00e9 ci sono molte probabilit\u00e0 che la campana si rompa\u201d.\u202f\u202fQuesta sar\u00e0 l'ultima volta che il\u202f<\/span>Campanone<\/span><\/i>\u202fpotr\u00e0 essere ruotato, essendo gi\u00e0 stato girato sugli altri lati. <\/span>[\u2026]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Il Campanile di Giotto \u00e8 dotato in totale di 12 campane di cui 5, le pi\u00f9 antiche, sono oramai dismesse ma disposte ancora all'interno del monumento, mentre le altre 7, tra cui il\u202f<\/span>Campanone<\/span><\/i>, di epoche e misure diverse, sono funzionanti e insieme costituiscono il cosiddetto\u202f<\/span>Concerto<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>[\u2026]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Oltre al\u202f<\/span>Campanone<\/span><\/i>, le altre 6 campane attive sul Campanile di Giotto sono quelle della\u202f<\/span>Misericordia<\/span><\/i>, realizzata nel 1670 e rifusa nel 1830, l\u2019<\/span>Apostolica<\/span><\/i>, l\u2019<\/span>Annunziata<\/span><\/i>, la\u202f<\/span>Mater Dei<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/i>l\u2019<\/span>Assunta<\/span><\/i>\u202fe l\u2019<\/span>Immacolata<\/span><\/i>, quest\u2019ultime fuse tra il 1956 e il 1957. Le campane del Campanile di Giotto si trovano a un'altezza di 65 metri da terra, mentre anticamente erano a circa 70,5 metri.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
